Volunteerism – Community Outreach

Our Elfun organization provides a key forum for local GE employees, retirees, spouses, and their families to stay connected, and support their community.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions on activities, our Elfun volunteer programs were on-hold and/or suspended for ~1.5 years. (AARP TaxAide is the only program that was not completely shutdown).

See the Outline below summarizing the San Jose Elfun Community Outreach Programs currently in place.

General Community Outreach:

  • AARP TaxAide Program:

Elfuns provide FTB and IRS tax aid (preparation and electronic filing)  for Seniors and low income people in the Santa Clara County. Elfun also provided training for the tax preparers.

  • Homeless Shelter Support: Elfuns provide needed toiletries to the local homeless shelters. We have also served meals and provided needed maintenance at homeless shelters.

  • Honor Flight:

Elfuns have supported the Honor Flight Bay Area (HFBA) program which includes flying San Francisco Bay area veterans (who served during a war) to Washington DC to visit their war memorials. Due to the pandemic, HFBA did not host flights in 2021. HFBA expects to have 5 flights in 2022.

  • Palo Alto Veterans Hospital BBQ: (partnering with GE Veterans Network) serving barbeque lunch to veterans and helping in whatever else was needed.
  • Rebuilding Together: Volunteering with various GE business units to repair/renovate homes in San Jose & Morgan Hill.
  • Special Olympics: Managing competitions and supporting athletes.
  • Surplus Eyeglass Donation: Elfuns, together with the San Jose Lions Club, collect surplus eyeglasses donated by Elfuns and GEH personnel. Lions Club then distributes them to people around the world who need glasses.

Education Community Outreach:

  • Almaden Valley Elementary School Tutoring Program:

Elfuns provide mentoring and classroom tutoring to Almaden Elementary school students. For over 16 years, Elfun volunteers have provided math tutoring to 4th and 5th grade students. This program has been extremely successful, and expansion of the program is under consideration. For more information, please contact Fred Ikemoto at masike@SBCglobal.net.

  • Engineer-for-a-Day with MESA:

Elfuns provide a tour and on-site engineering exposure to Mathematics Science Engineering Achievement (MESA) college students at the GE Hitachi BWR Services Technology Center.

  • Lego Robotics:

Elfuns mentor students in preparing their projects for Lego Robotics competitions. Elfuns also serve as judges at the competitions.

  • Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Education Program (MB STEP):

For many years, Elfuns volunteered in the Santa Clara County public schools’ (K-12) annual STEP projects. Teachers were trained, and students were taught about the life cycle of local salmon and trout, culminating in a field trip to release the fry. (Elfun support is currently dormant.)

  • Science Fairs: Mentor students and judge science projects at final competition.
  • GE Engineer for a Day: invite upcoming engineering students to tour our GE Facility, listen to talks by GE engineers about their careers, plus lunch.
